I am presenting you a very interesting effect of sound on our brain. To keep myself short in this introduction I will just demonstrate the effect (it will take 24s of your time, and trust me, it will be really interesting :). All you are going to need are earphones: you will not hear the effect if you don't use earphones (you can't use speakers - I'll explain why latter :)First, listen this 6s long audio with only 150Hz frequency tone: Now, listen an another 6s long audio with only 151Hz frequency tone: And now, the interesting part. :) Listen the next audio - it's also 6s long, but it will give you sound with frequency of 150Hz on your left earphone and sound with frequency of 151Hz on your right earphone (I told you that you'll need earphones ;). While you listen this audio your brain will hear a new, pulsating sound: the new sound will pulsate with frequency of 1Hz (it will actually pulsate with a frequency that is equal to difference of the frequencies that are used for the stimulation, in this case: 151Hz-150Hz=1Hz). For the end of the demonstration listen an audio that will give you sound with frequency of 150Hz on your left earphone and sound with frequency of 152Hz on your right earphone: this will result that the third sound that brain hears will pulsate with 2Hz - notice while you're listening that it is pulsating twice faster. Further on, I will explain why this is happening and why this type of signals is very important to the brain (this is why we can figure where a sound is coming from). Also I will show you how this phenomena is related with achieving different states of conscience (the whole brain actually becomes synchronized with this frequencies what can be used to control it): from concentration and active thinking over relaxation to deep meditation (depending on what sound frequencies you chose) and I will present you little software that you can use for the sound brainwave stimulation. At the end, for those who want to learn more about this phenomena I prepared a little list of papers published on this topic in scientific journals
Theoretical backgroundIn 1839 German scientist Heinrich Wilhelm Dove discovered that by listening of two tones of different frequencies, each on one ear, one can hear a third, completely different, tone called binaural beat. In 1973 Dr. Gerald Oster showed in his work, published in “Scientific American”[1], that this stimulation brings to synchronization of brainwaves, namely on a frequency that is equal to subtraction of frequencies that one is stimulated with. For example, if one is stimulated with 410Hz tone on left ear and 400Hz tone on right ear, after a few minutes dominant brainwave frequency will be 10Hz. To explain why this third frequency appears I will remind you why do we actually have two ears and not just one. Two ears enables us to locate a direction of a sound. For example, if a source of the sound is located in our left side, the sound will come first to our right ear and than to our left ear. The time passed after the sound came to the left ear and before it came to the right ear will indicate to the brain in which direction is the source of the sound. Therefore, the brain is very sensitive on sound stimulation with two similar frequencies, each on different ear: brain considers that as a constantly moving sound source and concentrates on it what results by synchronizing of the brain waves with the sound frequencies. This discovery was followed by research about possible applications of brainwave stimulation in treatment of diseases like epilepsy and asthma, disorders like depression and insomnia, but especially possible use of brainwave stimulation in achieving different states of consequence - what I implemented in the very simple software I am also presenting here. The software is written following scientific discoveries presented in [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6] and [7] Installing the software and system requirementsThe software installation and running is analogous to typical Windows applications. To install the program unpack .rar archive and run setup.exe. Follow the instructions within the installation program. Run the software from your "All programs" group. The software will work under Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems. You must have working sound card and earphones to use the software. How to use the softwarePlug in your earphones and put them in your ears - you must use earphones (not speakers) to experience binaural beat effect (your left and right ear will be hearing different sound frequencies). Take a look at the frequency table (below) and chose what state of mind would you like to achieve: | Frequency range | Name | Associated with: | | 13–30 Hz | Beta waves | Active, anxious thinking, concentrated | | 8–12 Hz | Alpha waves | Relaxation, resting | | 4–7 Hz | Theta waves | Meditation, very very deep relaxation, idling, drowsiness | | < 4 Hz | Delta waves | Very very deep meditation, unconscious activity | Next, in the text fields (see the software print screen below) Frequency 1 and Frequency 2 type two frequency values such that their difference (Frequency 2 - Frequency 1) is within the interval that corresponds to the state of conscience you want to achieve (see the table). Sound signal with Frequency 2 will appear on your right earphone and sound signal with Frequency 1 will appear on your left earphone. According to several scientific studies, to obtain best possible stimulation and efficient results chose both, Frequency 1 and Frequency 2, such that they are higher then 100Hz and lower than 1500Hz (best at around 450Hz). Also, chose frequency difference such that it is between 1Hz and 30Hz (otherwise no binaural beet effect will occur).
You can adjust binaural beat sound amplitude by moving the slider that is located right to the Frequency 1 and Frequency 2 text fields. Note that scientific studies show that the amplitude of binaural beat is not important - it is important that you hear the sounds, but, for example, they do not have to be loud. If you would like to hear some relaxing sound, beside binaural beats, you can click on the radio buttons Ocean 1 or Ocean 2 to turn on the relaxing background sounds.
